Basic Eligibility Requirements
Are You Qualified to be a Police Officer?

Drug Use
  • Have you purchased or used marijuana or any illegal drug within the last year? 
  • Do you have a pattern of illegal drug use, including marijuana in the past three (3) years? 
  • Have you sold any illegal drug for profit? 
  • Have you ever used an illegal drug (no matter how many times or how long ago) while in a law enforcement position, or in a position that carries with it a high level of responsibility or public trust?
If you answered YES to any of these questions, you should NOT apply for a position with the
Rio Rancho Police Department. They are immediate disqualifiers.

Crime Involvement
  • As an adult, have you admitted to or been convicted of an offense, defined a felony by the federal, state, or local government where the offense occurred? 
  • Do you have a pattern of theft from an employer during the course of your employment as an adult? 
  • Have you committed any theft offense within the last three years that exceeds a value of $500?
If you answered YES to any of these questions, you should NOT apply for a position with the 
Rio Rancho Police Department. They are immediate disqualifiers.

All applications will be considered for selection process when the applicant meets the following eligibility under
New Mexico State Law (29-7-6 NMSA 1978):

  1. Must be a United States Citizen.
  2. Must be at least 21 years of age. 
  3. Must hold a high school diploma or the equivalent. 
  4. Must hold a valid New Mexico driver's license. 
  5. Must be willing, if approved, to refrain from participation in any subversive activity. 
  6. Must not be convicted of any felony charge. 
  7. Must not have pled guilty to any felony charge. 
  8. Must not have entered a pleas of nolo contendere to any felony charge. 
  9. Within a three-year period immediately preceding this application, not have been convicted, pled guilty to or pled nolo contendere to any violation of any federal or state law or local ordinance relating to: 
    • aggravated assault,
    • theft
    • driving while intoxicated, 
    • controlled substances, or 
    • other crime involving moral turpitude. 
  10. Must not be released or discharged under other than honorable discharge from any of the armed forces of the United States.
  11. Within the a 3-year period of applying, must not have used any illegal or non-prescribed substance. 
  12. Must be found, after examination by a certified psychologist, to be free of any emotional or mental condition which might adversely affect their performance or completion of a training program as a Police Officer.
